Three Good Things [09.12.14]

Is fall really here? This New England girl really, really hopes so, though I can’t get truly excited until the sub-season of Sweater Weather sets in. Then, watch out. My house gets taken over by cinnamon apple candles and long sleeved t-shirts and pumpkin muffins (and in a good year, playoff baseball, but this ain’t that year). Anyway, I’ll take this more fall-like day and the later-rising sun and the explosion of pumpkin everything in my Pinterest feed as a good thing. Here are a few more from this week.

Three things I loved this week:

  • 90210’s back, baby! I sighed when SoapNet and its four shows went dark last December 31, mostly because one of those shows was (the original) 90210. I’ve seen every one of those 300 episodes many times over, and yet, I wasn’t ready to let them go. Yeah, I could watch them on Amazon Prime, but it’s not the same as happening upon the Spring Dance episode, or Brandon and Kelly’s wedding, or even better — a marathon. But now? It’s back. TVGN, Tuesdays and Fridays, ALL DAY. In case you wondered what I’d be doing during maternity leave, you’re looking at it.
  • This Funny or Die post about Saved by the Bell. In case it’s not yet clear, I’m a trash TV girl. Yeah, I love critically acclaimed shows like The Americans and The Wire, but they just balance out my 90210-Saved by the Bell-Bravo watching habits. Anyway, this post takes on a Very Important Question about SBTB, one that any true fan has had for a long time. Read it and tell me you don’t agree.
  • Candy corn. See my hail to fall, above. Combine that with my stupid low-fat gallbladder diet and you get a girl who was way too excited to see Brach’s candy corn on sale 2 for $3 this week.
Three things I learned this week:
  • The 100 books that showed up most often on those Facebook book lists. Although I find it difficult to believe that The Going to Bed Book didn’t crack the most-listed books, one of mine (The Handmaid’s Tale) did. Also, how did I forget Catcher in the Rye? Ah, Holden Caulfield.
  • Why kids like Elmo so much. This is a question I have really, really been looking for the answer to since Teddy got hooked after watching exactly TWO episodes of Sesame Street. And now I know that his annoyingly high voice is actually a real reason. Gah.
  • The Cincinnati Bengals not only moved Devon Still from their practice squad — where they’d assigned him to give him health insurance coverage for his daughter, who is battling Stage IV cancer — to the active roster, but they’re also dedicating the proceeds of sales from his jersey to pediatric cancer research. That’s a stand-up team right there, in a week where the NFL seriously lacked stand-up people, teams, and a commissioner.
Three things I felt grateful for this week:
  • Seven years of marriage. We’ve put those “for better, for worse, in sickness and in health” lines to the test, and I’m pretty happy with the result so far. Also, my husband comes up with the most creative anniversary gifts. For this copper anniversary, all the new copper pipes in our basement weren’t enough, so he bought me a plant in a copper pot.
  • Final inspector sign-off on the basement! We traded a final check to the contractor for our keys back, and now it’s just ours to fill up. Basement round-up post to come soon, really.
  • Six weeks to go until D-day. Which also means six weeks left at work. Hooray! Senioritis is setting in in a big way…though I’m apparently deluding myself into thinking that caring for a newborn (and a toddler) will somehow be less work than sitting at a desk and editing other people’s words.

What did you love, learn, or feel grateful for this week?

This post is part of the Ten Things of Thankful series.

  1. This is AWESOME. I don’t know how I’ve missed your Three Good Things posts before. I might eventually use this idea, linked back to you, if that’s okay? Saved by the Bell FOD post – hilarious. Elmo – interesting, especially since I work with young children. FB books – I was a little nervous before I saw the list, but am glad for at least the top 20. And your Seven Years of Marriage post was a great read; I caught that one when you posted it. Have a great weekend!

  2. Candy corn and play-off baseball. *sigh* I’m hoping that this year…for the first time in almost 30 years I will know the thrill of play-off baseball. It has been entirely too long. And candy corn…I love me some candy corn. Makes me happy, even though I don’t eat a lot of it. I like to have it around just in case I want it. That and the pumpkins. Goodness I love the pumpkins. Think I might need to grab a bag for the ride home this afternoon 😉

  3. I like sweater weather, it’s the transitions that are tough for me. Ummm. Staying at home with toddlers – 1 million times more difficult than working full time. But the rewards are incredible. Go Bengals.

  4. Copper pipes in the basement not enough for the anniversary?! lol So funny. You really are at the 7 year point. It is getting through those piping issues and the mundane together that bond us though. Happy Anniversary.

    • Thanks! We realized last week just how ridiculous some of the conversations we have now are…but that’s what happens after all these years. I was happy with the copper pipes but he had to go above and beyond. 🙂

    • Thanks (on both fronts)! Thankfully the toddler will still be in daycare during the days but mornings, nights and weekends should be interesting…don’t think he understands the change that’s ahead. Eeek!

  5. Well I can’t get excited over candy corn not only do i not like it….I am also allergic to the corn syrup in it… Stupid corn…

Anyway… A toddler and a newborn. WOW. Both more work and less work.. Both more stress and less stress. Just different kinds.

    And Happy Anniversary!

  6. Oh man…gallbladder pain is no joke. I had to wait almost a year (god bless the Canadian health care system and its “free-ness” which means ridiculous wait times) to get mine out. Worst time of my life. I dropped tons of weight and was put on a diet of nothing really yummy. I ended up with a severe deficiency of vitamin B12…like psychosis severe…sigh…I feel for you. Really. I had mine ripped out and my stomach still isn’t the same. I have episodes after fatty meals. Not all of the time. My surgeon said that it is normal. Pft…
Candy corn and 90210…you’re speaking to my heart 🙂

    • Wow, sounds like you really went through the wringer with your gallbladder? I’m hoping to avoid post-birth gallbladder surgery. Thankfully the last time my inflammation went away after pregnancy…here’s hoping for the same this time. Re: candy corn and 90210, seems like there should be a game in there somewhere. Eat a candy corn every time Dylan drinks? Or Steve cheats? Ha.

  7. I actually own all ten seasons of 90210 … I realize that takes a bit of the “surprise” factor away, but every now and then when the urge hits I can pop in the last year of high school; or find Steve as a frat boy, or watch Kelly choose her etc… loved that show.

I’ve avoided Elmo with my girls – we’re firmly in Dora/fairyland at present.

Congrats on your anniversary and what sounds like much else to be thankful for!

  8. Happy Anniversary to youuuuuu 🙂 Seven is a great number, and how lovely that you got your pipes sorted out and that everything passed inspection.

Still can’t bring myself to be thankful for autumn though, not really. Perhaps it’s because there’s less hype about it over here – we don’t (on the whole) go in for Halloween/Harvest/Pumpkin everything in a big way – it’s just colder and darker and (usually) rainier.

Have a good week, and enjoy the first of those few weeks left at work 🙂

  9. Yep. It’s that time of year when i get fall envy. Living in Florida will do that to you. But I can still do the candles….and pretend.
Wait? Brandon and Kelly got married? Why don’t I remember that??? I remember watching that show religiously with my oldest daughter and then Melrose Place. I would love to catch a couple of those episodes.
The NFL is definitely not having a banner week but Cincinnati might have redeemed them with that. What an incredible thing to do. Good for them!

    • Brandon and Kelly decided at the last minute not to get married but it’s still one of my favorite episodes of the show! That’s awesome that you and your daughter had a 90210/Melrose Place tradition.

  10. The rock I love under is huge hence I had no idea about Devon Still, his daughter, the Bengals or any of that first rate, stand-up awesomeness. I am a Steelers Girl from way way back but now I am a Bengals fan as well. I might live in MD but I am not a Ravens fan; my dad was born and raised in Pittsburgh.
